Mathematics : Importance and problems faced by the Students

Mathematics is not just counting no.s and doing sums it is beyond that. It is poetry for a mathematics student. The way mathematics defines nature is absolute beauty. Mathematics is the subject which gives logical answers to most difficult questions.

Mathematics is the language and basis of science particularly physical and computer science. Even our mothers at home who haven’t gone to school do some mathematics in their day to day life. It has very vast applications almost in every field. But the problem is most of the student can’t find these applications of mathematics. They are always blaming school teachers, where did we use that formula. What is the use of trigonometric ratios. When (a+b) ² helped us in solving real life problems. The story is same for kashmiri students.

Most of the kashmiri students like other students find mathematics tough subject than others. It has various reasons. In kashmir students are told that mathematics is tough subject and it is not easy to solve questions by yourselves. In short a different mindset is being created in student for mathematics as they grow with their age they find it difficult.

Another reason is that in various schools those teachers are teaching mathematics who don’t belong to this subject and thus students find it difficult to understand. A student who has strong base in any subject can read and learn it by himself. When a non mathematics teacher taught mathematics to students of class 5th , he can’t properly explain them the real concepts and will show them only questions, so without knowing the concepts students can pass the exams but in next classes they will find it difficult to understand the questions.

If we will do a survey in the schools from class 8th to 10th , more than 75% students will say that mathematics is very difficult subject. It is because they haven’t understood the concepts well in their lower classes. Every one is busy in copying and no one is talking about real mathematics. In order to understand mathematics a student of class less than 10th needs on a average of 1.5 hours daily to study mathematics at home. If a student understands mathematics then it seems easiest subject among all subjects. For kashmiri students it is not less than ghost for them.

Now in almost all job oriented exams mathematics has been made compulsory. Now those students who left mathematics from 10th onwards find it difficult to study mathematics portion for these exams. So it is not only headache for school going students but a ghost which exists in real for the job seeking aspirants.

It is mathematics who shows us imaginary and complex world by numbers. It shows us how imaginary number when combined with some irrational constants gives us a real number and unity. It has shown us relation and functions between two different variables. If a student will learn mathematics in his lower classes he will not find an easy and interesting subject other than this. Most of students are using guides when teachers give them home work rather than solving question by themselves because they haven’t understood the concepts well enough to solve questions.

Mathematics is for learners not for those who are memorising it. If you memorise it you will not learn anything and after some span of time you will forget it. But if you learn it once you don’t have to memorize it , it will be automatically saved in your memory and you will not forget it easily.

Nowadays in almost more than 80% exams mathematics/quantitative aptitude is compulsory for competitive examinations. For civil service exams a separate qualifying paper is for aspirants which mainly consists of logical reasoning and aptitude. So it is difficult for those students who didn’t like mathematics or assume it is tough to qualify this paper no matter how intelligent are they.

Mathematics is a practical subject. And elementary mathematics is used by all persons in day to day life. In schools mathematics should be taught as language, so that every student can talk using this language. Mathematics is absolute beauty for those who understands it. All theories in physics are based on mathematics. Computer science the most important part of today’s world is also based on mathematics. If we look at anything around us it is all about mathematics. From world’s largest buildings to human going to world, mathematics is the tool behind this. From measuring the height of Burj Khalifa to measuring the depth of Pacific Ocean, Mathematics made it possible. Mathematics has very important real life applications. In order to make mathematics easy for students, teachers should focus on basics of mathematics rather than stick to questions only. They should show them the beauty of mathematics.

Mathematics should be made compulsory by the Board of school Education upto class 12th like english subject. So that students didn’t suffer in competitive exams. It also needs self study.

The Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on 26 February 2012 announced at Madras University,to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan 22 December as the national MATHEMATICS day in India.

Ramanujan was great indian mathematician who gave very important mathematical results which have very wide applications. Belonging to very poor family his work in mathematics is appreciable.

In nutshell mathematics in todays world is important for all student irrespective of what subject they want to read. It gives strong mental strength to students.
